Navajo Shaman: They are the mystics ... the wise ones ... the mediators with the Spirits.

Wherever found, the Shaman is the direct connection with the Beyond. They are the master of the subconscious performing as the the healer, the predictor or accompanying dead souls to their resting place. The Shaman is the healer and counselor bringing harmony to the community. The Navajo Shaman are highly respected and are given gifts to perform the chants for the Ceremonies.

This rendition of the Shaman was taken from a photo circa 1900 and dramatically reflects the anger in the eyes. When they were held captive in the forts, the soldiers forced them to have their photos taken and the Indian, especially the Shaman, believed the white man's box stole their spirit.
